Year 7 - Year 10 Retreats Last week, students from Years 7 to Year 10 participated in a series of retreats and reflection sessions across the Mackay region. These activities provided valuable opportunities for students to develop their personal identities and leadership skills. The retreats also served as an excellent occasion for students and staff to build stronger relationships outside the traditional classroom setting. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to see firsthand the enthusiasm, challenges, team-building exercises, reflections and prayer experiences undertaken by our students.
Thank you to all the staff who were involved in making these days so successful.
Bikeathon I would like to thank all who participated in and supported the recent St Patrick’s College Bikeathon. We were blessed with excellent weather and it was great to see both students and staff enjoying this event.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
The Betterment Project As part of the Rotary Club's End Domestic and Family Violence Campaign, The Betterment Project visited St Patrick’s College on Tuesday 13 May 2025 to talk to our Year 11 and 12 boys.
Mason Black and Daniel Mason spoke to the students about how to build respectful relationships with themselves and with women. The Betterment Project aims to prevent domestic violence, sexual assault and suicide by fostering good habits in young men before bad habits manifest.
Thank you to the Mackay Region Rotary Clubs for sponsoring this opportunity.
Domestic Violence Awareness Breakfast Student Leaders from St Patrick's College recently attended a breakfast event focused on raising awareness about domestic violence. The gathering brought together community members, local leaders, and advocacy groups in a united effort to address the serious issue of domestic and family violence. By participating, the students demonstrated their commitment to promoting respect, safety, and social responsibility within their school and the broader community.
Year 7 to Year 10 Retreat Week
Last week students at the Mercy Campus experienced their year level Retreats. We have sourced high quality, in demand presenters who speak at schools, businesses and sporting clubs around Australia to help us run our Reflection Days each year. I hope that every student has had the opportunity to take away something that they will use, either now or in the future, that reflects our St Patrick’s College values: compassion, hope, justice and respect. Below is an outline of what the students experienced on their Retreat days.
Year 7 The Year 7 retreat experience at Ocean International was guided by Az Hamilton from ‘Just Motivation’. Using his incredible ability to connect with youth, he shared personal experiences such as travelling to and being evacuated from Haiti in the 2008 riots. Az spoke on issues being faced by our Year 7’s and challenged their hearts and attitudes to be inspired and live a life worth getting excited about with small ideas that can bring about BIG change in their world. Through his presentation, group activities, storytelling, games and thought-provoking discussion, Az challenged and inspired our students to see faith through a different lens to make a positive impact in the world. He taught the students the need to be positive, be grateful and that they can make a change with any negative attitudes and self-centred actions.
Year 8 Students had the opportunity for self-reflection and to develop stronger friendships with their peers during their annual Retreat days held at The Event Centre, Mackay Turf Club. This two-day experience was conducted by Dave Jorna of ‘Project Hatch’, a Brisbane-based Youth Retreat team who convene programs of various topics and themes in schools throughout Australia. The aim of this Retreat was to assist students to recognise their inner gifts and strengths. They explored how they are called to use these gifts and the impact they can have through their actions and presence. Additionally, students looked at the importance of acting with integrity and authenticity, which will enable them to make a difference to others.
Year 9 Last Tuesday and Wednesday, Year 9 students were given the opportunity to take a step back from the pressures of the classroom and reflect on their experiences as a cohort and the direction they want to take as they look to enter senior schooling. Led by renowned facilitator Mr Michael Fitzpatrick, students were invited to reflect on their own individual choices and the impact their decisions have on those around them. Through several group activities (and lots of karaoke!), the two days focused on uniting the students and encouraging them to identify their own and others’ key strengths and contributions. Through a faith-based lens, students were able to articulate the key values they wanted to carry through with them as they move into year ten and beyond.
Year 10 Our Year 10 students recently had the privilege of listening to Glen Gerreyn, a motivational speaker who shared powerful lessons about goal-setting, perseverance, and self-belief. Glen emphasized the importance of working hard to achieve your dreams, reminding students that "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t put in the work." Through activities, reflection and real-life examples, he encouraged students to stay focused on their ambitions. Upon reflection, one student stated, " He inspired us to dream big and know that no goal is unachievable if you put in the work," capturing the impact of Glen’s message. Another added, "he spoke to us about turning our fears and weaknesses into strengths and the importance of drive in our everyday lives", showing how motivated students felt to push beyond their limits. These messages will support our students as they navigate their final years of schooling and prepare to take on future challenges with confidence and determination.
I would like to thank Mrs Kelsey Wallace for her invaluable help with organising the retreats; the many wonderful staff who guided, encouraged and supported the students during their retreat days; and the members of our community who gave of their time to support the development of our students. The coming together of our whole school community really celebrates the true ethos of Catholic education and what it means to be a member of the St Patrick’s College community.
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 cohort had an unforgettable experience on camp at the Kinchant Outdoor Educational Centre last week. Students took part in a variety of experiences designed to build confidence, strengthen teamwork and develop leadership skills. Lasting memories and new friends were made.
Thank you to all the staff who ensured our students had a memorable time.

Bikeathon 2025
What a fantastic day we had for our 2025 Annual College Bikeathon! We were truly blessed with glorious weather, and it was heartening to see such a strong turnout from students, staff, and parent volunteers coming together to support this much-loved event.
A very special thank you goes to our two Police parents, Julia and Kerri, whose presence ensured the safety of all participants and provided great encouragement throughout the course. Your dedication is deeply appreciated.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many parent volunteers who contributed in countless ways—supervising checkpoints and intersections, riding or walking alongside students, and assisting behind the scenes back at the college. A special mention goes to those who helped run the BBQ, keeping everyone well-fed and energised. Your support made a significant difference, and it was clear that our parent involvement continues to thrive.
Congratulations to Clare Millard, the lucky recipient of a Sorbello's gift voucher, randomly drawn from the list of parent volunteers who helped on the day. We are grateful for your support.
We are also fortunate to have Evan from Corry Cycles once again this year, generously contributing towards a new bike valued at over $1,000, which will be drawn next week. Additional student prize winners will be announced at next week's assembly and published in our next newsletter.
Thank you once again to everyone who gave their time and made financial donations to support the Brekky Van initiative. Your generosity plays a vital role in strengthening our college community and enriching student wellbeing. From early morning set-up to the final lap across the finish line, the Bikeathon was a testament to what we can accomplish together as St Patrick's College.

National Reconciliation Week 2025
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
This year’s theme “Bridging Now to Next” reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.
In today's world, many young people are exploring who they are - not just in terms of career aspirations or friendships, but also how they understand themselves, including their gender identity. For some, this journey is straightforward. For others, it can involve questioning, rethinking, or expressing gender in ways that may not align with traditional expectations.
As a parent or caregiver, it's completely natural to feel uncertain or even overwhelmed at times. You might have questions, concerns, or simply want to better understand how to respond in a way that's helpful and affirming. The important thing to know is that gender diversity is not new - but our awareness and understanding of it is growing. It means recognising that not everyone experiences gender in the same way. While many young people feel comfortable with the gender they were assigned at birth, others may experience or express their gender in ways that feel different to what's traditionally expected.
Supporting a gender-diverse child doesn't require you to be an expert - it requires you to be present, open-minded, and willing to listen. Research shows that young people who feel accepted and supported by their families have significantly better mental health outcomes, regardless of where they are in their gender journey.
Bond University National High School Mooting Competition
Two students, Mikayla and Claudia, recently participated in the Bond University National High School Mooting Competition. Mooting is a simulated court proceeding where students prepare and present legal arguments on a fictional case. It is an educational exercise designed to develop skills in legal research, reasoning, and oral advocacy. Participants act as lawyers, presenting their arguments before a panel of judges, who then evaluate their understanding of the law, ability to articulate legal points, and responsiveness to judicial questioning. Mooting helps students gain practical experience in legal argumentation and courtroom etiquette, providing valuable insight into the legal profession.
Their impressive performance representing their client earned them positive feedback from the judges, and they have successfully progressed to the semi-finals, which will be held at Bond University’s Gold Coast Campus on Saturday 7 June.
In addition to advancing in the competition, the girls were awarded an Honourable Mention for Oral Advocacy. This accolade highlights their ability to clearly and persuasively present legal arguments, demonstrate a strong understanding of the law, and effectively respond to judges’ questions during the competition. Their achievement is a testament to their dedication and talent in the field of legal advocacy.
Bond University year 12 Extension Program
Mikayla and Mackenzie recently participated in the Bond Business School Year 12 Extension Program, a fast-paced and engaging two-day workshop designed to prepare students for university life. Facilitated by world-class academics, this program offers an enriching experience that complements the existing Year 12 curriculum in areas such as business and legal studies.
During the program, participants face real-world situations that challenge them to hone their skills, solve problems, and collaborate effectively with their peers. This hands-on approach helps students develop practical skills essential for success in higher education and beyond.
As a result of her outstanding performance, Mikayla was awarded a 50% part-fee scholarship exclusive to the Year 12 Extension Program. This scholarship provides a significant reduction in tuition fees for an undergraduate degree at Bond University, recognising her dedication and potential as she prepares to advance her academic journey.
Congratulations to Mikayla on this well-deserved achievement, and best wishes to both Mikayla and Mackenzie as they continue to pursue their academic goals.

Vinnies Commissioning Ceremony & Community Appeal
In Week 4, the Vinnies committee gathered to celebrate the Vinnies Commissioning Ceremony, officially welcoming this year’s members into the St Vincent de Paul committee. It was a special occasion recognising the commitment of students who are dedicated to helping others. For some, it was a warm welcome back, and for others, a heartfelt welcome to their new role.
As part of our ongoing mission to support those in need, we are currently seeking donations of tinned goods, blankets, and other non-perishable items (see poster for details). Every contribution, big or small, will go directly to helping people in the local Mackay community.
To further support this cause, we’ll be holding a Free Dress Day on Wednesday 18 June. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation or a canned good as their contribution.
Let’s come together in the spirit of generosity and compassion to make a real difference in the lives of others.

QMEA Beakers, Bots and Builds Workshop
This week, some of our year 9 and 10 students were able to attend this workshop with a key focus on mining automation, technology and innovation provided by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy. They provided a dynamic environment to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills with various STEM Activities, including automated robotics, laser mazes and logistics.
Students met with Theiss industry representatives where they learnt about their various journeys into the Mining Industry. They discussed the various career opportunities including programmers, logistics operators and mining engineers. Many students realised there was more to mining then driving trucks and hitting a little red button. We are looking forward to working with QMEA to provide opportunities for more workshops in the future.
Blackout Poetry: Creativity Meets Classic Lit
Think poetry is just old-school flowery words? Think again. Blackout poetry is the ultimate creative remix. Take a page from a book or newspaper, blackout most words, and reveal a fresh poem, hidden in plain sight. It’s part art project, part brain teaser, and all kinds of fun. This form of poetry sharpens focus and sparks new ways to play with language. For students, it’s a freeing way to turn dusty texts into personal stories, making writing feel less like a chore and more like self-expression. Teachers love how it engages everyone, even the reluctant writers.
Blackout poetry isn’t just a trend – it’s a powerful tool to unlock creativity and fresh perspectives. Scroll down to see some Year 12 examples courtesy of Miss Hannant’s Class.
Helping Hands Donation Drive
The Year 10 students from St Patrick’s College Mercy Campus are proud to be supporting Badihagwa Secondary School in Papua New Guinea through their donation drive Helping Hands.
Last year a student joined our school from Papua New Guinea and shared with us how challenging education in Papua New Guinea is. We discovered that educational resources in PNG are often limited and expensive. School funding is at an all-time low and parents are often asked to purchase items such as desks and chairs for their student.
We are asking if members of the community would be able to spare any unwanted stationary, uniforms, novels or sporting equipment to support these students. A donation bin is located in the front office at St Patrick’s College, Mercy Campus.
Families can place any items they wish to donate in these bins. Help educate a student today!
Thank you for your support.
